HMAS Hobart Commissioning

The commissioning crew of HMAS Hobart, line the decks, alongside Garden Island, Sydney during the ceremony. *** Local Caption *** The Royal Australian Navy commissioned the guided missile destroyer HMAS Hobart in Sydney in a formal ceremony steeped in tradition.

The Prime Minister, the Honourable Malcolm Turnbull; Minister for Defence, Senator the Honourable Marise Payne and Minister for Defence Industry, the Honourable Christopher Pyne, joined the Governor of New South Wales, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley, the Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, as well as the family and friends of the ship’s company to welcome the newest ship to the Australian fleet.

Hobart, the first-of-class of three new guided missile destroyers, will provide air defence for accompanying ships, in addition to land forces and infrastructure in coastal areas, and for self-protection against missiles and aircraft.
